I have just arrived at my hostel in Valencia. It is quite pretty and clean and there is a place for me to sleep (and a place for me to lock my stuff away). Currently there's only one other bed taken in the room I'm in, but it's just hit official check-in time, so we'll see what happens. Frankly, I'm probably going to be doing a lot of sleeping no matter what, so who cares!
Valencia (or what little I've seen of it from the air and walking the nice 10 minute walk to the hostel) is beautiful. I don't feel like I could have picked a better place to make my home for the next few months. It's currently sunny and 19 degrees Celsius (I'm too jet-lagged to do the calculation, so basically it is jeans and t-shirt weather in the sun) and walking around the city is wonderful. It's got lots of Plazas (or Plaças as they're spelled here, because Valencian) and nice wide streets. I walked under some orange trees to get to my hostel if that tells you anything. There are also quite a few palm trees. It's nice. It's got a very Mediterranean feel. It's kind of like Rome, but slightly more red and white than yellow-orange. (I don't know if that makes sense to you, but it does to me, but I'm REALLY jet-lagged).
I did manage to catch maybe 2 hours of sleep last night, so I will hopefully make it to 6 or 7pm this time. That's all I'm hoping for really. But I have to make it to then or I'll continue to be jet-lagged. IN order to stave off the (oh so sweet embrace of) sleep that I really want right now, I'm headed down to the train station to check on the possibilities for getting to Madrid tomorrow.
So far so good with my Spanish. The people I've talked to (airport people, metro people, people who gave me directions when I got lost on the way to my hostel people) seem to understand me and I understood them, so hopefully that continues.
Anyway, I'm going to go look up how to get to the train station and hope for the best!
Happy whatever time it is there
